How to Combine Multiple Cells into One in Excel

Sometimes you need to join the text from two or more cells into a single cell. For example, if a first name, middle name, and last name are stored in separate cells, you can combine them into one full name.

Example

Suppose you have the following data:

A	B	C
Ram	Mohan	Sharma

You want the result to be:

Ram Mohan Sharma

Method 1: Use CONCAT (Newer Versions of Excel)

If you are using Excel 2019, Excel 2021, or Microsoft 365, use the CONCAT function.

Formula:

The " " adds a space between each name.

Result:

Ram Mohan Sharma

You can also add your own text.

Example:

=CONCAT("Employee: ",A2," ",B2," ",C2)

Result:

Employee: Ram Mohan Sharma

Method 2: Use CONCATENATE (Older Versions of Excel)

If you are using an older version of Excel, use the CONCATENATE function.

Formula:

=CONCATENATE(A2," ",B2," ",C2)

This gives the same result:

Ram Mohan Sharma

Method 3: Use TEXTJOIN (Recommended)

TEXTJOIN is the easiest and most flexible function. It lets you choose a separator (such as a space or comma) and can ignore empty cells.

Formula:

=TEXTJOIN(" ",TRUE,A2:C2)

Result:

Ram Mohan Sharma

Which Function Should You Use?

• CONCAT – Use in newer versions of Excel.
• CONCATENATE – Use in older versions of Excel.
• TEXTJOIN – Best option because it automatically adds a separator and can ignore blank cells.
